Brighton alumna wins global illustration award

91精品福利视频 illustration graduate Lucia Vinti has won a top prize at the Association of Illustrators (AOI) World Illustration Awards 2020.

3 November 2020

Lucia came away with the New Talent award in the Design Product & Packaging Category for work she completed while studying Illustration BA(Hons) at the 91精品福利视频. Her winning illustrations were from a commission which tasked her with creating the family guide for the exhibition at the Tate Britain last year.

The guide, which contained activities and questions for families to get stuck into while visiting the exhibition, was produced by hand using a mixture of colouring pencils and brush pens, and then scanned. 13 drawings were published, with around 40,000 copies of the guide printed.

The AOI’s World Illustration Awards attracted entries from over 4,300 people from 79 countries, which was followed by a competitive judging process to select the winning projects from a shortlist of 200.

In an interview with AOI, Lucia explained how her studies provided inspiration: “I did a lot of visual research – drawing different characters to try and get people with real personality.

“I had recently finished a university project about museums where I did a lot of people watching and took a tonne of photos of museums, so this came in really handy.

“Doing the project alongside my university work was a challenge, but definitely worth it!”

Reflecting on the achievement, Roderick Mills, senior lecturer and course leader said: “I am so pleased for her. Also, it’s good to remind everyone that whilst very forward thinking in terms of illustration, our students can mix it up with ‘traditional’ forms at the same time!”

Lucia’s dream commissions are to work with travel companies and illustrate a recipe book, and she is currently writing and illustrating her first children’s book.

Like many during the COVID-19 pandemic, she works from home: “I made a nice big desk by sticking a large bit of plywood on my old IKEA desk. I have a big wall of postcards and other inspiration, and many, many plants. I’m hoping to move into a studio space in the next few months.”

The former Brighton student says the award is a reminder to focus on subjects she loves: “I feel very lucky to have done this project and that the right people happened to see and enjoy my work, but that luck wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t done lots of personal work about museums.

“Just believe in yourself (or at least pretend to!) and don’t see yourself as an amateur, no matter what stage in your career you are at.”
