Boosting awareness of how universities are tackling climate change

The university is showcasing its climate actions after research found many people were unclear of the role of universities in tackling climate change.

28 April 2022

Nationwide polling by Universities UK (UUK) found less than half of UK parents (49%) recognised the key role universities are playing in researching solutions to the climate change crisis.

A similar number (46%) of parents with 16–18-year-olds in the south-east felt unsure how universities were equipping students with knowledge about climate change. The research also found, however, that 46% of adults wanted to acquire green knowledge and skills to help contribute to tackling climate change.

The 91精品福利视频 is showcasing its wide-ranging climate mitigation work as part of a wider UUK campaign launched on 28 April, backed by actress and environmentalist Lily Cole.

In the field of transport, for example, Brighton has been creating hydrogen engines for both cars and heavy vehicles, helped develop a pioneering solar-powered car and been a key partner in creating the revolutionary Dolphin N2 engine which provides world-leading low emission levels. Brighton researchers have also helped develop new greener fuel options, such as using biomethane produced by farm slurry and sewage.

Sustainability principles and practices are embedded across the university, from hundreds of solar panels on its buildings to innovative teaching and research in architecture, design and business, as well as environmental sciences.

Projects under way at the university include a five-year study to improve global flooding responses, plus research on how aquatic plants extract carbon from the environment which was complemented by a campaign that has helped protect carbon-capturing kelp forests along the Sussex coast.

Students from Brighton's acclaimed design degrees have invented a stream of innovative award-winning green products as part of their degree work, including ingenious waste leather products and plant-friendly building blocks.

And the university's Green Grown Platform works with a growing array of businesses in the south-east to support green innovation alongside business growth.

Ollie Swan, Head of Sustainability at the university, said: "We need urgent and ambitious climate solutions and must ensure future generations are given the chance to build the careers they need to tackle this emergency head on. The innovative and focused approach we take here at Brighton can make all the difference in equipping students with the knowledge and skills to help them to make a positive impact on the planet, whatever path they choose.

"Brighton, along with other universities, is centre-stage in the UK’s climate action efforts, from researching bold and innovative solutions, to mobilising businesses and local communities in ways that benefit us all."
